PESTLE

PESTLE is an acronym for an analysis which draws attention to external factors which can influence how an organisation needs to operate. These factors are:

Political – national/international influences, pressure group activity, policies from government, trade unions or employee associations

Economic – customer spending power, pricing of products and/or services in competitor organisations, rate of inflation, rates of tax, implications of proposals for a minimum wage, fluctuations in interest rates

Social – levels of unemployment, availability of public transport, changes to structure of families and demographic patterns, increase/decrease in public services, changes to working patterns

Technological – development/changes to methods of communication e.g. increased use of e-mail and internet, increase in computer literacy, improvement/changes in technology

Legal – European and national government legislation and policies, awareness of future changes in legislation

Environment – increase in interest and awareness of the general public in ‘green'/ethical issues on local, national and international levels
